Let's Agree to Agree About What We Agree About
a humble appeal
I get that we’re very divided politically as a nation.
I get that a lot of folks hate a lot of other folks right now for merely existing. And that a lot of other folks hate those folks back for hating them.
People are angry. Worked up. On the edge. We all feel it every day.
This is our current reality. It’s rough out there in traffic, on planes, in stores, and online. It seems like everyone is keyed up and bloodthirsty. Folks are always looking to get hair-trigger offended, escalate to extreme conflict and see their enemy “taken down”.
So many people seem to have become so callous, unfeeling, and cold but also wildly emotional and reactive.
Politicans aren’t going to solve it. They benefit.
News/social media isn’t going to solve it. They benefit.
Influencers and podcasters aren’t going to solve it. They benefit.
The only ones who can solve it are us. Regular people. Grunts on the ground.
My appeal is thus:
Can we at least just agree to agree about the things that we agree about? —Edzo
Simple, right? But it seems so difficult. Guys, we can do this. I implore us.
Look, it’s fine if Fred wants to hate commie libturds and Reggie wants to hate fascist MAGAs. Have at it, guys. Hate away.
All I’m saying is that if Fred and Reggie both agree that this country should take better care of its nation’s veterans so hundreds of thousands of men and women who served in the miltary don’t end up rotting homeless in the streets, then they should agree to simply agree ON THAT.
Nobody’s saying Reggie and Fred have to be friends, or join hands and sing Kumbaya. You two can keep hating each other if that’s what you guys feel like you need to do.
But how about we all just agree to agree about the stuff that we all agree about for the sake of actually getting some shit done? So we can get the veterans off the streets or fund cancer research or whatever.
Can we just fucking agree to agree about the stuff about which we all agree? At the very least? As a START?!
Guys, I’m not even going to get into running off a list of examples of various morals/ethics we should all be able to agree on. Do you really need some blowhard blogger burger chef to do that for you? No. You don’t.
You know what the right thing is. I know you know.
So stop allowing hate, resentment or spite to knock you so far off your moral course that you end up backing stuff you know is wrong just for the sake of avoiding aligning with folks you’re convinced are your enemy.
That’s dumb. You gain nothing by doing that and you prevent things you support from getting done.
Doing wrong shit you know is wrong because you’re mad at someone is fucking dumb. That’s childish. It’s letting your emotions overrule your brain. It’s allowing people who benefit from us all fighting to manipulate you. Cut it out.
Again, I’m not saying you can’t be angry. Or that you need to stop hating certain people. But don’t make who you hate your entire personality or ideology. And your feelings shouldn’t cause you to do stuff you know is wrong or stupid.
See? Simple. Uncontroversial, I think. I hope.
Lets agree to agree about the stuff we agree about. Who’s with me?
